Artist Statement
The works explore our connection with our (extended) kin, encompassing themes of reciprocity, care and companionship, as well as investigating autonomy and agency. How does this kinship sit, and fit, within the greater world? The starting point is Katashi, my fat white cat, whom I adopted as half of a pair from Cat Haven in February. Who rescues who in the adoption process? Perhaps he is the super hero and not me??
The principal material is Katashi’s own fur (willingly parted with through ecstatic brushing sessions), sometimes used on its own, and at other times combined with other animals’ wool/fur (Dolly the Sheep’s wool and Honey and Benji the Golden Retrievers’ fur).
Artist bio
Eleonora Brusasco is an emerging artist living in Western Australia who strives to engage with the natural world on more egalitarian terms. Themes of kinship, belonging and identity are explored through diverse media, including working in collaboration with other living beings. Hybridised works seek to disrupt traditional hierarchical views. Katashi is a new collaborator and is the starting point for the works in this exhibition.
Eleonora and Katashi wish to thank Honey, Benji and Dolly (and their humans) for their kind donations of fur/wool.
